Jay Wheeler ? Paul Arthur
What were you doing before you became a personal trainer?
I?ve done many things since I left school. I served 5 years in the army as a section commander in Iraq 2003 and after standing beside some of the most heroic people I?ve ever known I found myself having the confidence to sell which naturally led into recruitment, which progressed to a managerial role very quickly. I?ve also worked in many other sectors focusing on various professions. I?ve always had an interest in the human body; I gained A grades in both practical and theory GCSE PE and always maintained my fitness in the army, so combining these skills and interests seemed like a natural progression.
?
What inspired you to become a personal trainer?
Like most young boys, as a kid I always wanted to be involved in some way with? the military ?.real life action man! So after numerous fitness courses in the army and maintaining my fitness thereafter, I felt that the fitness industry was the natural choice. This alongside my passion for human anatomy and desire to help people, becoming a personal trainer was not only an easy decision but suited everything I loved. I feel extremely privileged to love what I do.
What is the most common myth women have about exercise?
Every day I hear women say ?I don?t want to get big??Women have exactly the same muscles as men! With that said there is a fundamental difference to how our bodies build muscle which is massively important when toning up and losing weight. It?s hugely important to fill the gap between the bone and the skin, because if it?s not muscle it?ll be fat. If done correctly, resistance (weights) is the best way to lose weight and tone up?.fact.
?
How important is what you eat in terms of staying fit and healthy?
Diet in my opinion is massively important, because it?s imperative that the body gets the right amount of protein in order to build muscle and carbs to restock much needed energy etc.
Nutrition is a huge subject with lots of do?s and don?ts. I hold a weight management course every Monday at the club and spa at 18:15 where all the tips and myths will be answered.
What do you think makes the clubandspa different from other gyms in Birmingham?
I really feel the club and spa offer a completely different experience, the equipment is second to none, and are definitely the best I?ve ever worked with. Functional and dynamic equipment used correctly equals guaranteed results which not only makes my job interesting and rewarding, but also my training and physique have changed dramatically.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I really enjoy seeing people change and gain confidence, it?s massively rewarding. I also like to fix people?sounds crazy but I love it when a client comes to me with an injury whether it be past or present and using my knowledge of the body and experience with exercises I simply fix them. I have practised manipulation and sports massage so there isn?t anything I can?t help with.

Is exercise important if we are already the ideal weight?
Exercise is important to stay fit and healthy- after all the heart is the most important muscle. ?Excise also makes you feel great, have more energy ? the benefits are fantastic. So everyone should exercise full stop!

What everyday items can we use to work out with as an alternative to going to the gym?
The home is full of things to use for exercise, and in fact with a bit of imagination anything can be transformed into a workout tool. The thing to remember is anything that increases the heart rate is good for you whether it?s vigorous housework, doing the gardening ? however the quicker the heart rate the quicker the results, so the simple fact is the harder you work the better.
Start by thinking ?what makes me get out of breath?? most of us have stairs ? use them in a circuit! Or a chair! Step up on it, do press ups, sit ups, do static squats, the possibilities are endless. However having a gym is beneficial.

What is a typical day like for you?
Well I?m up at 6 am for work, but then my days are never the same really. I could have clients from as early as 6.30am; because I?m self employed I work on my clients demands, so most nights I don?t finish much before 8pm. This means some really long days without much time for anything else, but I see it as a positive, because being busy is a sign I do my job well.
My clients vary so much so my days are always really different and challenging which I love. I train myself at least 6 times a week so once a day but with my charity event fast approaching I tend to do a lot more? it is so addictive!
?
You mentioned participating in a charity challenge soon, can you tell us a bit more about this?
In short, on September 13th, I will be travelling on foot 145 miles non-stop from London to Birmingham carrying 35lbs, no rest or sleep for approximately 40 hours! I previously did this mammoth challenge in 2010 for Help for Heroes and would really like support again which you can do via our website which also tells you a lot more about the challenge and my team.
