Mountain Home (Style Spotlight) | AOL Real Estate

mountain home style spotlight
By Bud Dietrich, AIA

I've just started the design of a new home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western Virginia. The property, more than 5 acres, is spectacular -- heavily wooded, with a change in elevation of almost 100 feet from front to back. As the land slopes away, the treetops drop down revealing mountain and forest vistas and a stream in the valley below.

As part of the design process, we looked at classic American mountain houses built from the 19th century onward. From the Adirondacks to the Blue Ridge Mountains and beyond, there's a specific aesthetic for a house in a wooded and mountainous site. Big and simple gable roofs reflect the shape of the mountains while easily shedding rain and snow. Big, tree-like timbers, often used as found on the site, support these roofs. All of this rests on local stone formed into foundations, plinths and chimneys. The metal plates and anchors joining these elements have a heft and scale to match the surroundings.

These homes situated in the wild have given up the refined elegance, gentility and constraints of the city. They are raw, natural and massive. And it's this massiveness, this scale, that is most intriguing about these homes. Built in the land of giants where mountaintops touch the heavens, trees reach for the sky and lakes appear bottomless, these homes can hold their own.

Romney: Claim that he hasn't paid taxes 'untrue'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney says it's time for Democratic Senate leader Harry Reid to put up or shut up when it comes to talking about the Republican presidential candidate's taxes.

Reid has been saying this week that an investor with Romney's former company, Bain Capital, claimed that Romney didn't pay any taxes for 10 years. Reid says that's why Romney isn't releasing more than a year or two of his tax returns.

Reid isn't saying just who makes that claim ? and the Nevada Democrat adds that he isn't certain that it's true.

On Thursday, Romney told radio host Sean Hannity that Reid needs to, in Romney's words, "put up or shut up." He called the claim about his taxes "untrue, dishonest, and inaccurate."

Are Americans ready to solve the weight of the nation?

ScienceDaily (Aug. 1, 2012) ? In a Perspective article appearing in this week's New England Journal of Medicine, public health researchers examine how recommendations in a new report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) -- "Accelerating Progress in Obesity Prevention: Solving the Weight of the Nation" -- square with American's opinions about the obesity epidemic.

Over the last 30 years, rates of obesity have doubled among adults and tripled among children. The new IOM report summarizes growing evidence that these increases have been driven by a complex interaction of changes in the environments in which we live -- our schools, our workplaces, our communities, in the media and in our food and beverage systems.

While praising the IOM report's scope and vision, Colleen L. Barry, PhD, MPP, associate professor of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and lead author of "Are Americans Ready to Solve the Weight of the Nation?" says that it is critical to understand how the public thinks about the problem of obesity. Barry notes that one recent poll found that 64 percent of Americans believe personal decisions -- overeating, lack of exercise, watching too much television -- are the biggest contributors to obesity. However, only 18 percent of Americans attribute environmental factors, such as safe places for children to play, access and availability of healthy foods and exposure to junk food, as major contributors.

"If people think obesity is all about individuals and parents making bad choices, they will be much less likely to embrace changes in schools, communities and food marketing practices aimed at creating healthier environments," said Barry.

Jeff Niederdeppe, PhD, assistant professor of communication at Cornell University and a co-author of the article, emphasized the need for "a research-driven communication strategy to encourage a better understanding of the environmental determinants of obesity among the public, and to emphasize the importance of waging a collective response to the epidemic." The IOM report was accompanied by a four-part HBO documentary series, "The Weight of the Nation," which Niederdeppe described as a great example of the kind of communication partnerships that are needed.

However, communications efforts on obesity should include careful attention to "the potential to increase already high levels of stigma toward obese adults and children, which can have lifelong psychological, social and health consequences," according to Sarah E. Gollust, PhD, assistant professor at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health and a co-author of the Perspective article. Gollust noted that the IOM recognized this concern and explicitly included as a guiding principle the notion that obesity prevention should not be achieved at the expense of overweight or obese individuals' well-being.

The authors concluded that while widespread awareness of obesity's causes and consequences will be necessary, increased awareness alone will not be sufficient to put in place the extensive actions that the IOM report stipulated will be necessary. A favorable political environment as well as leadership in multiple sectors and grassroots advocacy will be needed to support the efforts of the public health community to reduce obesity

Vanquished by le Clos, Phelps matches medal record

Chad le Clos denied Michael Phelps' bid for a 200m butterfly treble by a hair's breadth Tuesday, but silver allowed the US superstar to match the record for most medals in an Olympic career.

South Africa's le Clos, third at the final turn, relentlessly reeled in Phelps and plunged past him at the finish to win in 1min 52.96sec.

Phelps, who had led at every turn in a quest to become the first man to win the same Olympic swimming event at three successive Games, was just five-hundredths of a second back in 1:53.01.

Japan's Takeshi Matsuda earned bronze in 1:53.21.

Le Clos thrust his body out of the water in delight upon seeing the scoreboard. Then he perched on a lane rope as he tried to absorb his achievement.

Phelps has dominated the 200m fly for a decade. He owns the four fastest times in history and his world record of 1min 51.51sec is more than one second faster than the second-best performer in history.

When he saw the result, he flipped his cap away in disappointment.

Phelps' silver medal took him level with Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina as the most decorated Olympic athlete of all-time with 18 medals.

He was to return later Tuesday as anchor of the US team in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay final.

Phelps' 18 Olympic medals include a record 14 gold -- eight of them from his spectacular Beijing Games campaign.

He won six gold and two bronze in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, and has won two silvers so far in London -- in Tuesday's fly and in the 4x100m freestyle relay.

Spy Some Space in a Small Bedroom ? Home Improvement

Not everyone is lucky or wealthy enough to have an expansive master bedroom that would fit a king-size bed, closet and every imaginable bedroom accessory. Most people have to make do with much smaller bedroom space, that if a larger bed is owned, makes it seem impossible to fit anything else. This creates a need for extra storage space for all the other items you prefer to keep handy such as your clothes, shoes bags, and an assortment of collectibles. Nonetheless, with a little creativity and organization you can create additional storage space in your bedroom without necessarily having to engage in an expensive home improvement project.

The Closet

In addressing the question of wasted space, the first culprit is your closet. This is one feature that takes up a significant amount of space in your bedroom and if well organized it could be used to create storage for items stuck or crammed elsewhere. Before you think of buying extra shelves and racks for your closet, get rid of all the unwanted stuff inside to see how much space you have. Hard as it is to accept, most of the old clothes will have to go to create space for other useful stuff taking up space elsewhere in the room. A good rule of thumb to follow is that of you haven?t worn it in a year or more, you probably aren?t going to. These items can be bagged and taken to a local GoodWill or Salvation Army. Any stuff that belongs to the attic or garage should relinquish the space they take up in the closet to create more room.

With the closet now breathing freely, you can then move on to free up some more storage space in your bedroom by making use of bags and other containers designed for under bed storage. Good examples of these are clear plastic boxes that are slim enough to fit under your bed. With a little creativity, an old dresser drawer fitted with suitcase wheels makes a good sliding under bed storage.

Wall Space

There is usually plenty of wall space in your bedroom if you took time to do a little survey. Bedroom walls provide a lot of room to store almost anything from books, photos, magazines and other keepsakes that you would normally keep in a space consuming rack beside your bed. With the help of a home improvement expert or DIY manuals, you can install attractive shelves on the wall space especially behind your bed.

Corners

The corners of your bedroom can be put into good use using a shelving unit that snugly fits in the corner. This can be used to store perfumes and other handy items such as watches and purses. Make good use of the window sills if they are large enough to keep books and other showpieces. Once you have created enough storage space for the items cramming your bedroom and freed the closet to create more room, your bedroom will have enough space around your king-size bed.
